Is Dead Just Dead?

Do you ever think about your inevitable death? Or are you like the influential theater tycoon Bernard Jacobs, who said, “Of all the things in the world I think least about, it’s what happens after you die. Dead is dead.” Is that what happens when we exhale our last breath and our brain cells stop functioning? When our life has come to an end, are we totally extinguished like a flame of a candle plunged into water? That’s a common belief. But it isn’t what the Bible teaches. Hebrews 9:27 declares that it is appointed for us “to die once, but […]

Have you ever heard skeptics say that the Christian faith is nothing more than a crutch—that the only reason people claim to trust Jesus is that they are weaklings who have to make up “religion” to get by? Perhaps those skeptics haven’t heard about Paul. After trusting Christ, he was arrested, flogged, mocked, and shipwrecked (2 Cor. 11:16-29). We as believers were not looking for a crutch. No, we have something deep and essential in our hearts. We have a personal relationship with God—a relationship born of faith in the work of Jesus on the cross. As a result, we became children […]

Ps. 103:1-4   Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Some days we awaken with aching joints and dull spirits and wonder how we can shake off our lethargy and make it through the day. Here’s an idea: Like David, try lifting up your thanks to God. Use mind and memory to rekindle thankfulness for all God’s “benefits” […]

Bring the Joy Back!

Scripture: John 15:11 and Galatians 5:22-23 1. Introduction: I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but folks aren’t smiling much these days. Jesus wants us to smile, to exhibit joy. He said, “These things I have spoken unto you that My joy may remain in you and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11). I’ve been reading the Bible this week with joy in mind, and everywhere I turn I find it. Joy is the atmosphere in which Christians live. We rejoice in the Lord always (Phil. 4:4); we “rejoice evermore” (1 Thess. 5:16). As someone put it, “Joy is the gigantic secret of the Christian.” […]

Do Dead People Go to a Better Place? Scripture: Various, especially John 14:6 Jesus said … “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Introduction: How many times have you found yourself at a funeral where family is assured their loved one is “in a better place?” It seems more often than not this phrase is used of the deceased despite the kind of lives they lived or what they believed. I call these “funeral assurances,” a false hope given when the salvation of the deceased is actually unknown. Today we […]

I read a story about Roger who had been through a lot. He had open-heart surgery to repair a leaky valve. Then, within just a couple of weeks, doctors had to perform the surgery again because of complications. He had just begun to heal with physical therapy when he had a biking accident and broke his collarbone. Added to this, Roger also experienced the heartbreak of losing his mother during this time. He became very discouraged. When a friend asked him if he had seen God at work in any small ways, he confessed that he really didn’t feel he […]

Unchanged BIBLE MEDITATION: “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” James 1:22-25 DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: James gives this description of […]

Scripture: James 5:19, 20 Jas 5:19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins. Introduction: The hardest person to reach, according to surveys, is the person who has drifted away from the Lord and is out of fellowship with God’s people. The reality of straying people (v. 19). Christians can stumble in many ways (James 3:2). Christians can stray or wander from the truth. We are not perfect. The […]

Some decisions we make are more important than others, but all need to be made with care. The Book of Proverbs gives us four principles for wise decisions. Place your trust completely in God. Proverbs 3:5,  The closer I am to God the more apt I am to make wise choices (Proverbs 16:3). Plan ahead and think things through (Proverbs 6:6-8, 10:5, 31:21). See the examples of the wise ant, the wise son, and the wise housewife. Gather All the Facts (Proverbs 13:16). Seek Godly Counsel (Proverbs 12:15, 15:22). Conclusion: Are you facing a tough decision? Once you have applied these four principles you can move forward with […]

The Five BE’s of Purity

The Five BE’s of Purity Scripture: Psalm 24:3-4 : Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart… Whatever happened to purity? It’s a rare commodity today, but as believers, we should be reflecting the character of God. We need to be clean because God is clean. The prerequisite for service is cleanliness. It’s also the prerequisite for blessing. But how on earth are we going to remain pure in a world like this? Be Careful What You See (2 Samuel 11:1-5). David’s sin began with […]
